Before the lesson
Give learners page 1; use the suggested answers on page 2 after they have written and compared their own responses.
- Match thanks, a leaving reason and a good wish to the teacher, neighbour, friend and shop-assistant contexts.
- Write endings for all eight situations, combining two short phrases where helpful.
- Practise a short conversation and its closing, giving the other speaker space to say goodbye.
Support and extension
Offer closing phrase pairs. Extend by changing the setting from phone to online chat. Accept natural alternatives; a brief honest reason is enough and learners need not invent an elaborate excuse.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
