Before the lesson
Give learners page 1 and keep the suggested answers on page 2 for discussion after they write.
- Compare surprise in Really? with the clearer doubt in I have my doubts or I am not convinced.
- Write responses to forecasts, project timing, product claims and sweeping statements about learners.
- Practise the exchange with a calm voice and a follow-up asking what supports the claim.
Support and extension
Offer because-clauses for support. Extend by distinguishing I haven't tried it from evidence that a claim is false. Accept alternatives; rising or challenging intonation can change the effect of Are you sure?.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
