A simple way to teach it

Before the lesson

Give learners page 1 and use the suggested answers on page 2 after they have compared their own responses.

  1. Separate offering to act from offering an item: Shall I carry…? versus Would you like something…?
  2. Write the eight offers and responses, including carrying bags, homework help and declining food.
  3. Practise an offer and a response; change partners so learners try both accepting and declining.

Support and extension

Provide offer/accept/decline stems. Extend with a short reason after No, thank you, while respecting that the listener can refuse help.

Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
