Before the lesson
Use the single-page list in small groups of letters, appropriate to learners' prior sound knowledge. There are no written exercises or answer key.
- Say the highlighted sound and its model word, then let learners repeat. Distinguish the sound in apple from the name of the letter A.
- Compare a few familiar initial sounds such as b in bear and d in dog. Keep x in fox as the final /ks/ sound rather than inventing an initial x example.
- Return to selected words for listening: say a word and ask learners to point to its letter pair. Treat queen as a qu example and avoid suggesting each letter has only one sound.
Support and extension
Support with oral modelling and familiar objects or pictures. Extend by finding another word for a practised sound; this is a starter reference, not a complete phonics programme.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
