Before the lesson
Give learners pages 1–2 and keep page 3 for feedback. Review clock times, weekdays, dates, months and parts of the day.
- Complete items 1–24, identifying the type of time phrase before choosing at, on or in. Compare at night with in the evening.
- Complete items 25–28 using the variety specified: at the weekend for UK English and on the weekend for US English. Both are valid outside this labelled practice.
- Write one clock-time sentence, one day/date sentence and one month/year/part-of-day sentence. Compare them with a partner and explain each preposition.
Support and extension
Support by colour-coding the time expressions. Extend by describing a weekly timetable; personal answers vary, and a correct regional usage should not be treated as a language error.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
