A simple way to teach it

Before the lesson

Use the warm-up about what makes a welcoming cafe. Match prepare, local, solution, reduce, improve and responsible; reserve page 3 for feedback.

  1. Read the three numbered paragraphs for the main change or problem, then reread for the people, actions and results.
  2. Identify the owner's aim, the conversation table, the volunteer and the waste-reduction discount in the four answers.
  3. Discuss meeting places, then plan the 80–100-word activity proposal for a cafe, library or school and explain how it helps.

Support and extension

Support with activity / people / benefit Rehearse answers in pairs before writing; accept accurate paraphrases and individual ideas. Extend by asking learners to design a welcoming sentence for a fictional new visitor.

Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
