A simple way to teach it

Before the lesson

Give page 1 to learners and retain the marked puzzle on page 2. Clarify diya, rangoli and sweets; the instructions allow words in any direction and ignore spaces and hyphens.

  1. Review the list aloud, including rangoli, before searching. Demonstrate following a sequence of letters rather than circling isolated matches.
  2. Learners find and mark all fifteen targets, comparing difficult locations with a partner before checking the marked key.
  3. Distinguish light from lamp and connect colour with rangoli before grouping objects and activities. Ask each learner to use two found words in a sentence or simple description.

Support and extension

Support by selecting fewer targets or giving a starting-letter location. Extend beyond locating letters to explaining meanings. Support unfamiliar words with images or definitions. Discussion can stay about decorations rather than personal religion; no candles need to be lit.

Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
