A simple way to teach it

Before the lesson

Give learners page 1; use the suggested answers on page 2 after they have written and compared their own responses.

  1. Distinguish thanking someone from releasing a busy person and specifying what happens next.
  2. Write closings for client calls, interviews, a paused discussion, agreed notes and other contexts.
  3. Practise a closing that includes the follow-up document or quotation without implying an unanswered issue is resolved.

Support and extension

Use thanks/next step/farewell notes. Extend by adding a realistic follow-up time. Accept suitable alternatives; I look forward to takes a noun or -ing form, and promises should match the agreement.

Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
