A simple way to teach it

Before the lesson

Give page 1 to learners and retain the marked puzzle on page 2. Clarify bonfire, sparkler and effigy; the instructions allow words in any direction and ignore spaces and hyphens.

  1. Review the list aloud, including November and Britain, before searching. Demonstrate following a sequence of letters rather than circling isolated matches.
  2. Learners find and mark all fifteen targets, comparing difficult locations with a partner before checking the marked key.
  3. Group event objects and event-management words such as crowd, display and safety. Ask each learner to use two found words in a sentence or simple description.

Support and extension

Support by selecting fewer targets or giving a starting-letter location. Extend beyond locating letters to explaining meanings. Use pictures or definitions, not real fireworks or flames. Extend with a description of a public evening event.

Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
