Before the lesson
Give page 1 to learners and retain the marked puzzle on page 2. Clarify menorah, dreidel and latke; the instructions allow words in any direction and ignore spaces and hyphens.
- Review the list aloud, including Jerusalem, before searching. Demonstrate following a sequence of letters rather than circling isolated matches.
- Learners find and mark all fifteen targets, comparing difficult locations with a partner before checking the marked key.
- Group light-related objects, food and game vocabulary, then connect eight with the holiday topic. Ask each learner to use two found words in a sentence or simple description.
Support and extension
Support by selecting fewer targets or giving a starting-letter location. Extend beyond locating letters to explaining meanings. Use this as cultural vocabulary practice, without requiring religious participation. Extend by describing an object from the list.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
