A simple way to teach it

Before the lesson

Give page 1 to learners and keep page 2 for checking. Explain toast as raising a glass here, not cooked bread; spaces are ignored in new year.

  1. Say the targets aloud, clarifying January, calendar and resolution.
  2. Find the twelve words in any direction and compare locations with a partner before revealing the key.
  3. Arrange countdown, midnight and celebrate in an event sequence, then use resolution and hope in two original sentences.

Support and extension

Support with fewer targets and meanings beside difficult words. Extend by describing a realistic goal. A toast can use a non-alcoholic drink; learners need not enjoy late-night parties.

Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
