Before the lesson
Use the lottery picture to establish hypothetical meaning before looking at the past-simple form.
- Ask whether the speaker has won the lottery. Separate imagined present/future meaning from a story about the past.
- Identify past simple in the condition and would plus a base verb in the result. Read the negative and result-first models.
- Use the wallet question for brief pair responses, then practise If I were you with a harmless fictional problem.
Support and extension
Support with the garden example and a word bank. Extend by contrasting If I have time with If I had time and explaining how the speaker's view of possibility changes.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
