Before the lesson
Use learner pages 1–2 and retain the key on page 3. Introduce the topic neutrally; the opening question may use an observed celebration rather than personal religion.
- Match the six words, then read the four paragraphs to see nativity, worship, service, symbol, charity and peace in context.
- Answer the five comprehension questions in complete sentences, locating support in the article. Accept accurate paraphrases and other article-supported answers.
- Discuss songs, symbols or practical charity, then set the printed homework: 120–150 words explaining a religious celebration and one story, symbol or value.
Support and extension
Support with paragraph references and an explanatory outline. Extend by distinguishing a symbol's meaning from an activity. Learners may choose a researched or observed celebration; discussion opinions are not keyed.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
