Before the lesson
Give learners pages 1–2 and retain page 3. Clarify folk tale and superstition without presenting a belief about luck as fact.
- Match the six vocabulary items, then read the four paragraphs, noticing the distinction between scary characters and playful celebrations.
- Answer the five comprehension questions using the article, explaining the pumpkin/harvest link and what happens in some neighbourhoods.
- Discuss a safe, welcoming event or costumes and stories, then set the printed 120–150-word description of a festival using costumes, stories or decorations.
Support and extension
Support with paragraph references and an event-description outline. Extend by comparing theatrical fun with genuinely frightening content. Allow a non-Halloween event for writing and discussion; comprehension paraphrases supported by the article are acceptable.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
