Before the lesson
Give pages 1–2 to learners and retain page 3. Introduce decorate and present as used in the article.
- Match the words, then predict what people may put on a tree.
- Read for decorations, shared meals and inexpensive ways to give; answer the five questions, including the two that challenge assumptions about food and cost.
- Discuss cards, food and holidays, then plan the 5–6-sentence homework about a holiday meal or family tradition.
Support and extension
Support by grouping vocabulary into decorations, food and people. Extend with an example of a gift of time or kindness. Allow fictional households and avoid assuming everyone celebrates Christmas.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
