Before the lesson
Start with verb + -ing and to + base verb. Keep the guide available as a reference rather than asking learners to memorise every list at once.
- Compare enjoy reading with want to travel, then sort a small selection from the two page-1 verb lists.
- Read page 2's usually-similar pairs and explain that the starred verbs require attention to meaning.
- Contrast stop smoking/stop to smoke, remember meeting/remember to call, and experiment versus effort with try. Use the printed regret examples for past regret versus formal news.
Support and extension
Support by learning complete verb phrases. Extend with paired mini-situations for one starred verb; consult a dictionary for the other starred patterns rather than claiming the page explains them all.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
