Before the lesson
Give pages 1–2 to learners and retain page 3. Establish Parliament, plot and effigy using definitions, not a detailed history lecture.
- Match the six words and distinguish commemorate from spectacle.
- Read for a sequence: the 1605 plot, its failure, the early fires and modern displays. Use that sequence to check comprehension.
- Discuss how public celebrations change meaning and why safety matters; plan the 120–150-word homework about a remembered historical event.
Support and extension
Provide a short timeline for support. Extend by asking which details explain the celebration's origins and which describe today. Treat fireworks as a reading topic, not a classroom demonstration.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
