A simple way to teach it

Before the lesson

Print page 1 and retain page 2. Clarify countdown, resolution and toast; New Year's completes the phrase New Year's Day.

  1. Read all twelve sentences and identify clues for time, month, activity and feeling.
  2. Complete the use-once bank and explain differences such as countdown/midnight and resolution/hope during checking.
  3. Discuss whether resolutions help and suggest one achievable learning goal.

Support and extension

Support with word-class hints and a countdown-to-midnight sketch. Extend by describing a goal and first step. Toast refers to a celebratory gesture and need not involve alcohol; alternative celebrations are welcome.

Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
