A simple way to teach it

Before the lesson

Use the single A1-A2 guide with two timelines and four examples. It has no exercises or key. Review a few familiar past forms.

  1. Locate both actions before now and compare a one-moment arrival with a longer completed activity.
  2. Read the examples with yesterday, last night and other finished-time expressions. Notice the base verb after did not and Did you.
  3. Describe an imaginary evening with an arrival and a completed activity. Ask a partner one Did you question using the guide for support.

Support and extension

Support with a short verb list and time labels. Extend by contrasting a completed film viewing with watching in progress; duration alone does not require past continuous.

Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
