Before the lesson
Reserve page 3 for checking. The UK/US reference can support the task, but the practice also includes return ticket and trainers.
- Model rubbish/trash and explain that the task asks for a common equivalent, not a judgement about which English is better.
- Complete each direction separately, comparing responses in pairs. Give chips/crisps and trousers/pants enough context to avoid confusing meanings.
- Check against the common equivalents on page 3 and discuss plausible regional alternatives. Explain round-trip ticket and sneakers with short travel or clothing examples.
Support and extension
Support with category word banks. Extend with a short shop or travel exchange in either variety, accepting suitable equivalents rather than requiring one regional word in every context.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
