Before the lesson
Choose a handful of entries relevant to your learners; the page needs no answer key.
- Start with tomato and Z so learners hear the contrast before reading phonetic symbols.
- Move to advertisement for stress and route for multiple accepted US forms.
- Ask learners to identify which differences might affect listening comprehension and which are simply alternative models.
Support and extension
Learners can keep their usual pronunciation. Avoid turning the chart into a rule about every UK or US speaker; the notes explicitly allow regional variation.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
