Before the lesson
Use the single learner page in pairs. Personal or invented responses can vary; there is no fixed answer key.
- Compare although the weather was wet with despite the weather in the concert example.
- Discuss outings, purchases and achievements with drawbacks; respond to objections about cost, annoyance, tiredness and unpopular choices.
- Compare two trips, courses or purchases, give benefits and drawbacks, and challenge each other's recommendation before agreeing.
Support and extension
Use although + clause and despite + noun/-ing, without despite of or a duplicate but. With -ing, check whose action the phrase describes.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
