What’s in the worksheet?

  • Useful phrases for both speakers
  • Two natural model conversations
  • Three paired role-play scenarios
  • Switch roles and practise again

Practise asking for help, checking sizes and prices, choosing within a budget, and explaining a faulty purchase. Partners have different information, so they need to ask questions and respond to options rather than read a shared script.

A simple way to teach it

Before the lesson

Print page 1 as the shared language reference. Cut or fold the paired cards on page 2 so each learner sees only their own role. Review pounds, clothing sizes, receipt, replacement and refund before starting.

  1. Read the jacket and headphones model conversations in pairs. Identify how the customer gives details and how the assistant offers an alternative.
  2. Allow 2–3 minutes to prepare and 3–4 minutes to speak for a scenario. In the T-shirt task, check that the customer considers both size and budget; in the gift task, have pairs calculate the total.
  3. Ask pairs to report their decision and one useful phrase. Swap roles and repeat with a changed size, budget or product, as suggested on the cards.

Support and extension

At A2, keep the phrase boxes available and start with the T-shirt scenario. At B1, try the headphones problem without reading the models during the exchange. There is no single correct outcome: check that the decision fits the card information and both speakers contribute.

Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
