Before the lesson
Use the single learner page in pairs. Personal or invented answers can vary; there is no fixed answer key.
- Read the Ben/brother model and explain why one identity is ruled out.
- Discuss tiredness, shutters, umbrellas and other clues; ask what supports only a possibility.
- Give a partner three scene clues one at a time and compare deductions before revealing the scene.
Support and extension
A silent room need not be empty. Accept alternative explanations and distinguish strong belief from proof; can't is a negative deduction here, not inability.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
