Before the lesson
Use the single learner page in pairs. Personal or invented answers can vary; there is no fixed answer key.
- Read the closed-cafe model and identify competing possible explanations.
- Discuss tentative plans, then suggest at least two explanations for silence, queues, excitement and delays.
- Describe a small mystery, discuss three possibilities and agree how to find out more.
Support and extension
Require evidence or context, not fixed probability percentages for may/might/could. Practise might not for an uncertain negative; invite another explanation before deciding.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
