Before the lesson
Separate the cards and clarify divisive, expertise and nostalgia. Encourage examples learners can explain without outside research.
- Ask the questions in turn, identifying assumptions behind a claim about economic growth, education or responsibility to future generations.
- Connect confidence versus expertise with constructive debate; ask what would count as a reason to reconsider a view.
- Finish by comparing nostalgia with lessons from history, or balance the needs of residents, visitors and businesses in an imagined city.
Support and extension
Support by focusing on one case and defining key terms. Extend with a synthesis that acknowledges a counterargument and uncertainty. No factual forecast or specialist knowledge is required; open answers have no fixed key.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
