Before the lesson
Use the two model conversations and key-phrase lists on the single learner page; the final prompts are open-ended and need no fixed answer key.
- Read the cafe model and compare holidays, office closure and painting as possible explanations.
- Trace the missing-cat discussion from warm hiding places to the neighbour's kitchen and a checking action.
- Choose a prompt and use two key phrases to suggest possibilities and decide what to check.
Support and extension
Offer might/could/maybe frames. Extend with He may have gone for stronger learners; keep the focus on careful speculation rather than requiring perfect-modal mastery.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
