A simple way to teach it

Before the lesson

Use the single learner page in pairs. Personal or invented answers can vary; there is no fixed answer key.

  1. Read the park/cycling model and notice Did you use to? and used to in replies.
  2. Ask about former homes, activities, tastes, people and local places, adding why things changed.
  3. Give three past clues and one present clue about a shared acquaintance or fictional character for a partner to guess.

Support and extension

Use base verbs, and use to after did/didn't. Allow imagined people and places; distinguish this past-habit form from be used to for familiarity.

Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
