A simple way to teach it

Before the lesson

Print pages 1–2 and keep the key separate. Model a / an by sound, not spelling, using an hour and a university from the grammar notes. Prepare two familiar objects to demonstrate first and later mention.

  1. Read the lunch dialogue, notice an apple becoming the apple, then complete Part A using the following sound.
  2. Complete At a cafe and Part C. Explain that an orange juice means one drink in this ordering context; in C3–4 rewrite only the second sentence.
  3. Write three sentences introducing two things and describing one again, then follow the paired speaking instructions.

Support and extension

For support, use real objects and a first-mention / known-thing chart. For an extension, add another sentence about a previously introduced object. Keep the lesson focused on its examples rather than every article exception. Personal responses vary; check sound choice and whether the listener can identify the thing.

Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
