Before the lesson
Set out one and several objects both near and farther away. Keep the answer page separate. Establish whose viewpoint matters: distance is from the person speaking, not from the reader.
- Read Choosing a jacket and complete Part A using both the noun number and the printed distance clue.
- Complete At a market and Part C. In B5, the scarf is in the buyer's hand, so it is farther from the seller who says that.
- Write three sentences about classroom objects, then point and ask the printed partner questions. Check is / are along with the demonstrative.
Support and extension
For support, display a two-by-two near/far and singular/plural chart. For an extension, swap positions so learners change words with viewpoint. Check fixed answers against page 3; classroom sentences depend on placement. Do not assess this / that without knowing the speaker's intended position.
Suggested approach. Adjust the pace and number of questions to suit your class.
